USS Technology Shop
User Support Services (USS) provides purchasing services to University of Oregon departments, programs, and institutes for the purpose of procuring computer and other IT equipment for use by their faculty & staff. USS technology requests are ordered through Duck Depot, the e-procurement site for the University of Oregon. This site is designed to standardize computer systems purchasing to achieve significant savings to the University by leveraging volume buying discounts with qualified technology vendors.
A note on prices: Requests are quoted and departments are charged at the full educational price. Any subsidies to be applied to requests are applied to the full educational price. The full educational price of items displayed are subject to change by vendors at any time.
Please Note: USS no longer facilitates the purchase of printers, and printing supplies. This service is being implemented and managed by the Fleet Copier and Managed Printer Program.
To submit an order, please fill out a USS Purchasing Request. If you would like to see your current order status or invoice information, please visit the CAS Department Manager Portal (Duck ID authentication required).
Below you will find configurable USS recommended computers and peripherals. Thumbnails will open vendor configuration pages in a new window.
Device Hardware Specifications
USS has developed the following standard specifications to ensure your system meets your needs for the next 4 years. Adequate processor power, memory and storage are key to a machine that will have a long operating life and provide users with the best experience. Machines that are sluggish or constantly out of hard disk space are a support burden on IT and prevent users from getting their jobs done.
These specifications will be adequate for users with moderate computing needs. Some examples are:
- Word processing and editing spreadsheets.
- Email and internet based workflows.
- Creating PDFs.
- Data entry, Student Data Warehouse, and Banner.
Intel i5 Processor
256GB Solid State Hard Drive
The computers in this category are configured for users who require increased processing power and more RAM. Some examples are:
- Audio/video/multimedia creation and editing.
- Running multiple high level applications simultaneously.
- The use of statistical packages and/or scientific software
Intel i7 Processor
512GB Solid State Hard Drive (SSD)
For users with advanced computing needs beyond the Performance Category, a custom configuration may be built. Examples of use cases needing a custom configuration are:
- Experiments, Research and Simulations
- Data Visualization and Analysis
- 3D rendering
- GIS Software
Exceptions outside of the standard specifications should have a clear business need, confirmed and accepted by the appropriate Associate Director of the supporting USS IT unit.
By choosing a limited array of supported models from a limited number of manufacturers, our goal is to allow technicians to become more familiar with the hardware they are being asked to support and to be able to leverage our vendors to provide us the best possible price. Standardization simplifies deployment, troubleshooting, repair and warranty work and allows us to more quickly serve our customers. By choosing the enterprise product lines we ensure the vendors will support those devices for 5+ years and keep parts and replacements in stock to satisfy our warranty.
*A note on Surface Devices. While Microsoft Surface devices have been previously purchased & supported, the Surface support structure is very limited. Simple warranty claims result in unacceptably long resolution times, and Microsoft has no clear escalation process to expedite repairs. For this reason, USS no longer purchases Surface Devices.
