Access your data from off-campus

In order to access many campus resources from home (e.g. cas-fs1), you first need to connect to campus using Cisco AnyConnect VPN.

The University of Oregon provides Cisco AnyConnect VPN software for anyone affiliated with the school. For more specific information on VPN and its usage on campus, please see Cisco AnyConnect VPN.

These instructions are written assuming that Java is up-to-date (as of the writing of the article) on the destination computer.

How to connect to your CAS home folder


Mac OS 10.6 – 10.10

Non-Java-based Installation

If you do not have Java installed on your Mac, or do not wish to install Java, follow these instructions:

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://uovpn.uoregon.edu
  2. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  3. The Sun Java applet will start and search for Java on your computer. Wait about 60 seconds for the applet to provide you with a link to the non-Java installer. Click the link and download the installer.
  4. Open the installer. Then, open the file vpn.pkg. If you receive a security warning, right-click on vpn.pkg and click on open.
  5. Follow the installer instructions to complete the installation. If you receive a prompt for a password, use your Mac’s login password.

Java-based Installation

If your Mac has Java installed on it, follow these instructions:

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://uovpn.uoregon.edu
  2. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  3. When the Java Security Warnings come up select “Run” or “Allow”.
  4. When prompted for your password, use your Mac’s login password
  5. The VPN client should connect automatically

Connecting

  1. If the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client application does not appear in your Dock, you can find it in Launchpad or your Applications folder.
  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client application.
  3. In the field under “Ready to connect”, type vpn.uoregon.edu and click Connect.
  4. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  5. You should see a “lock” icon appear on the application in the Dock and in your menu bar in the upper-right area of your screen to indicate that you have connected to the VPN successfully.

Disconnecting

  1. Find the Cisco AnyConnect VPN icon in the menu bar near the upper-right area of your screen.
  2. Click it and select “Disconnect”.

Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

Non-Java-based Installation

If you do not have Java installed on your Windows PC, or do not wish to install Java, follow these instructions:

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://uovpn.uoregon.edu
  2. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  3. The Sun Java applet will start and search for Java on your computer. Wait about 60 seconds for the applet to provide you with a link to the non-Java installer. Click the link and download the installer.
  4. Open the installer. If you receive a security warning, click “Run” or “Yes”.
  5. Follow the installer instructions to complete the installation.

Java-based Installation

If your Windows PC has Java installed on it, follow these instructions:

  1. Use a web browser to go to https://uovpn.uoregon.edu
  2. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  3. When the Java Security Warning comes select “Run”.
  4. After the installer runs, a green “O” icon will appear in the lower-right hand corner of the task bar.
  5. If you right-click on the icon and select “Open AnyConnect” a window will appear with your UO IP address.
    • If you are on campus during the install, it will automatically connect.

Connecting

  1. In Windows 7: Click the Start Menu > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client > Run Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility ClientIn Windows 8 and 8.1: Click the Start Menu or the Windows key on your keyboard > type “VPN and Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client should appear in the search results. Run Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. In the field under “Ready to connect”, type vpn.uoregon.edu and click Connect.
  3. Log in using your Duck ID credentials.
  4. You should see a message that the VPN client is connected to vpn.uoregon.edu

Disconnecting

  1. Click on the VPN icon in the bottom-right area of your screen. If you do not see the icon, click on the triangle icon and then click on the VPN icon.
  2. The VPN client interface should appear. Click on “Disconnect”.

How to connect to your CAS home folder

If you are off-campus, you will first need to connect to VPN (see Install And Use Cisco AnyConnect VPN).


Windows 7

  1. Open your Start menu
  2. In the search field, type \\cas-fs1\Home
  3. Press enter
  4. If prompted, authenticate with the following credentials:
    • Username: ad\YourDuckID
    • Password: (your DuckID password)

Mac 10.7 – 10.10

  1. Open Finder
  2. From the “Go” menu, select “Connect to Server…”
  3. Type smb://cas-fs1/Home/YourDuckID
  4. Click the “+” button to save your home folder to your Favorites
  5. Click Connect
  6. If prompted, authenticate with the following credentials:
    • Username: ad\YourDuckID
    • Password: (your DuckID password)

Mac 10.5 – 10.6

Please download and run the CASIT Home Folder Helper application.

  1. Is there anyway to connect to the CAS home folder, off-campus, from an iPad? I have VPN downloaded and running but there are no instructions on how to connect via iPad.

        I downloaded that same software after leaving my first message. Seems to work really well with the iPad. Haven’t had any issues so far.
