Four Winds Interactive Content Types

This article is designed for Four Winds content administrators to guide them through the various content types that are available to display along with highlighting key features for each type.

The list below will be going in order of how the Content Manager Desktop displays them within the user interface.

For any content type that requires storage or referencing a specific file, the file path must be complete and without any drive mapping on your computer. For example:

  • Correct file path: \\CASFS\Physics\Administrative\Four Winds\presentation.ppt
  • Incorrect file path: C:\\Desktop\Four Winds\presentation.ppt

If the file is pulling up the mapped address, you will have to edit it in the URL field in order for it to correctly deploy to a Player.

Image files require two fields in order to be added to the Content Manager as seen below:

Four Winds Interactive Image Dialog Box

  1. Enter the desired name for the file in the Name field.
  2. Enter the file path or URL of the image in the URL field.
    1. Image files can be PNG, JPEG, or TIFF files.
    2. Click on the File Folder button to search within your computer’s file system or to retrieve from an external URL
  3. Click the desired Scale mode to have the image snap to a particular location within its assigned region.
  4. Click OK to proceed.

The image file will now reside within the Content tab of the Content Manager Desktop software. Click and drag the image to the desired region of the template of the desired player screen.

Right-click the player screen icon then select Deploy to have it display on the player screen.

Live Data

Note: Some of the available data formats for this content type (like Microsoft Exchange) require a different license than what UO has presently.

Provide a name in the Name field for the Live Feed item:Four Winds Interactive Live Data Dialog Box

Live data files require two fields in order to be added to the Content Manager as seen below, however, there are additional layout considerations. An example of how one works is the UOAlerts! notifications:

  1. Insert a URL in this field. You can also select the file folder button (three dots folder button) to find the file from your file system or insert an external URL from a website.
    1. The Data Format help FourWinds to interpret the live data. Select the drop-down for the appropriate format. XML is the default choice and selected for the UOAlerts! notification system
  2. Since live data can be a bit difficult to read on a sign without any modifications, Layout should be included to make the data readable and to conform it to the desired region of your sign. Layout will allow for manipulation of certain data points however. (See Live Data Layout Properties for more information.)
  3. Press OK to save.

Four Winds Interactive Live Data Layout Properties Dialog Box

As mentioned in Step 3 above, the Layout section of a live data source is key to making the information more accessible and fitting into signage needs:

  1. Data Fields can be dragged-and-dropped into place onto a template below it. This particular example is showcasing XML-related terms.
  2. The Layout of the entire viewable area of the Live Data and for each data field can be modified (background color, background image, spacing, size, margins, etc.)

In the case of this example, the background for the entire live data file was set at the Template-level. Background images can be added per Data Field if desired for other files.

Text content requires one field in order to be added to the Content Manager as seen below, however, text content may be added by two different methods: by entering text into the Text field or adding a text (TXT) file in the Text URL field.

Four Winds Interactive Text Box

Text entered either in the Text field will show up as a single continuous line with no ability to add line breaks. Text files entered in the Text URL field allow for markup fields to be tagged and then displayed.

Wayfinding is a content type that allows for floor plans of a building to be entered into a sign that has touch screen capabilities.

Four Winds Interactive Bing Maps Properties Dialog Box

  1. Enter a name for the content in the Name field.
  2. Enter all of the appropriate data points for your map. It is not required though it will make your map much more legible.
  3. Click OK to save.

The Video content types allows for videos from your file system or YouTube for deployment to a content player.

Four Winds Interactive Video Properties Dialog Box: Video properties window with Name, Duration, URL, and Scale Mode highlighted

The Name field is required. The Duration checkbox is unchecked in the image above but it can be checked if you want the content to last a certain amount of time. The URL is either the address from your file system or an embed URL as seen on YouTube. Scale Mode tells the video how to fill the region to which it is assigned.

YouTube Embed URLs

When adding a YouTube video to your content player, special considerations need to be made so that:

  1. The video fits precisely within the desired region in the template
  2. The video autoplays without any prompting

To do this, the video URL needs to be modified in such a way to allow for the above conditions to be met. The FWI software will not allow for an embed code to be used.

  • Example (emphasis mine):
    • Original YouTube Link:
      • This would be the link shared via social media or messaging applications.
    • Embedded URL Modification:
      • This would be the link used in Content Manager Desktop in order to have the video pull up and autoplay upon being loaded.

The PDF content type allows for PDF files to be loaded onto a Content Player screen.

  2. The Duration can be a set amount or disregarded altogether.

Note: Given that the University population is from diverse backgrounds, it may make sense to make a Fahrenheit version and a Celsius version to add to your sign. See Step 3 above for more information.
