Restricted Use Data
Applying for access to restricted use data
If your research project requires access to restricted use data, CASIT Data Services can help you find the most suitable method for securely storing confidential data. We can also assist you in preparing a data protection plan. CASIT Data Services has experience with data protection plans for organizations such as the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
Secure Data Room
To meet the security requirements of most organizations that provide restricted use data, CASIT Data Services offers a Secure Data Room, located in McKenzie Hall. The Secure Data Room is used strictly for the purposes of working with sensitive data files by approved researchers at the University of Oregon. The room is windowless, has no master key access and all network communications have been disabled, including telephone lines and Internet connections.
The Secure Data Room is equipped with a standalone desktop computer with no cable connection to any network or modem device and no wireless networking capabilities. In addition, the Secure Data Room contains no printing or scanning equipment of any type and access to the computer is further secured through the use of passwords and encryption procedures.
Although the room is shared, the Secure Data Room is designed to be used by only one researcher at a time and we ensure that each researcher has access only to the data she/he is licensed for. Research projects are kept separate through the use of external hard drives that are stored in a safe when they are not in use.
